Charente-Maritime makes the protection of its environment an unmissable value. In La Rochelle and on the island of Ré, for example, where gentle and ecological journeys attract visitors and locals all year round.
Historic alleys or beautiful escape: in La Rochelle, 200 kilometres of cycling routes offer the choice of urban discovery or ocean spray. On the city side, you can travel through the historic districts of Saint-Nicolas, Saint-Sauveur or Saint-Eloi, bounce on the cobblestones of the rue de l'Escale, dare the alleys with arcades and designer shops. Sea side, after the shade of the centuries-old trees of Charruyer Park and the beautiful facades of chic Genette, the lights of the Atlantic. Put your wheels on the coastal path, play hide-and-seek with the horizon where the emblem of Charente-Maritime: Fort Boyard is cut out in clear weather. Ochre cliffs, gentle turns and here is already the beach of Chef-de-Bay. Tie up your bike and enjoy a little rest in this setting of sand and greenery.
Feel Re breathing
A few pedals later, Re appears to you, but Re deserves to be… Spanning the Pertuis, the arch-of-circle bridge climbs first two kilometers before a free-wheel descent of one kilometer on the town of Rivedoux dedicated to kite-surfers. To you a hundred kilometers of bike paths of a unique island, bucolic, dreamlike. Villages, alleys, tremière roses, white houses, green shutters, postcard pocket ports... To feel Ré breathe, go instead on the popular track «La Flotte-Saint Martin-Le Bois Plage-La Couarde» before escaping to Loix, the island in the island. Salt marshes and oyster farms accompany you to the tip of the Grouin. The walk is beautiful, nature. Further, in the heart of the Lilleau des Niges nature reserve, migratory birds are observed in moderation and the world is silent. Due north, in the Lizay forest and on the Petit-Bec side, the atmosphere is more «surf» and transparent waters. Here, at the end of the island, tour the beaches, Trousse-Chemise, Patache, Gros-Jonc… or choose one of them to look at the ocean in front. Les Portes-en-Ré are just a few wheel turns away, but be careful when returning to your hotel, La Rochelle is not… the next door.
